The "stainless steel" in stainless steel pipes refers to a type of steel that has excellent corrosion resistance and is resistant to oxidation and rusting. This steel is primarily composed of iron, carbon, and at least 10.5% chromium. Chromium is the key alloying element responsible for the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel. When chromium content reaches above 10.5%, it forms a thin, protective oxide layer (chromium oxide) on the steel's surface, which prevents rusting by blocking oxygen and moisture from reaching the metal. Below is a detailed explanation of the composition, properties, and reasons why stainless steel does not rust easily.

1. Main Components of Stainless Steel

Iron: The base element of steel, making up the majority of stainless steel.

Chromium (Cr): Chromium is the key element that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. When the chromium content exceeds 10.5%, it forms a thin but stable chromium oxide layer on the steel’s surface, which prevents corrosion by protecting the steel from oxygen and moisture.

Nickel (Ni): Nickel improves the ductility, toughness, and corrosion resistance of stainless steel, especially in acidic environments. Stainless steels like 304 typically contain 8%-10% nickel.

Other Elements: Stainless steel may also contain small amounts of other elements such as molybdenum (Mo), titanium (Ti), or aluminum (Al), which further enhance its corrosion resistance, strength, and high-temperature performance.

2. Principle of Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steel

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel mainly comes from the chromium element, which forms a dense and stable chromium oxide layer on the surface of the steel. This oxide film effectively prevents oxygen and moisture from reacting with the steel, thus preventing corrosion. If this oxide layer is damaged (such as by scratches or prolonged exposure to highly corrosive environments), chromium will react with oxygen again to regenerate the oxide film, which gives stainless steel its self-healing ability.
