Stainless Steel Welded Pipe vs Seamless Pipe | Strength & Applications

In pipeline engineering and equipment manufacturing, the choice between welded and seamless pipes is a critical decision affecting safety, lifespan, and cost. Each type of pipe has its own advantages and disadvantages, and differences in manufacturing processes determine their varying performance in strength, pressure resistance, workability, and price.

Welded stainless steel pipe is typically formed from coiled steel and then welded together. Common welding methods include high-frequency welding and submerged arc welding. It is suitable for large-diameter or rectangular pipes. In contrast, seamless steel pipe is formed through hot rolling, cold drawing, or hot extrusion. The pipe body is a single piece from beginning to end. The absence of welds allows for more uniform resistance to internal and external pressure.

Both types of tubing can be made of stainless steel (such as 304/316 series), with the surface polished or plated to enhance corrosion resistance. It is important to select the appropriate stainless steel type and treatment based on the media properties to extend service life.

Seamless pipe generally outperforms welded pipe in terms of compressive strength and fatigue resistance, making it particularly reliable under high-temperature, high-pressure, corrosive, or dynamic load conditions. The performance of welded pipe depends largely on the welding process and the treatment of the heat-affected zone (HAZ). Excellent welding and heat treatment can significantly enhance its performance.

When selecting a project, the design pressure, temperature, medium composition and connection method should be considered: seamless steel pipes are recommended for high-pressure transmission, internal pipes of key equipment, and extreme working conditions; when cost is sensitive, the working pressure is low, or the pipe diameter is large, welded pipes can be given priority, and the welding quality and non-destructive testing must be qualified.
